In spite of shifting environmental attitudes, the cruise ship industry is not going anywhere. Thousands of vacationers prefer the ease and variety available on a cruise holiday to standard travel, and even more are taking part in luxury style trips. So, if you didn’t think cruise ships could get much bigger…you were wrong. Here are five of the biggest cruise ships in operation today.
1. The MSC Meraviglia The Meraviglia by MSC Cruises is packed with lavish amenities including an LED dome, an amusement center complete with an outdoor water park, a sport plex, full size bowling alley and so much more. The cruise packages also include theatre shows by the famous Cirque du Soleil, a choice of 12 restaurants and bars, and cabin features like private whirlpool baths with ocean views. The spacious vessel first hit the seas in 2016 and weighs a hefty 167 thousand tons. It can carry 4500 passengers in a total of 2250 cabins and is 315 meters long.
2. Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas At 348 meters long and weighing 168 tons, the Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean was designed to cater to the Asian market and the technology available onboard proves it. Whether you’re taking a spin on the skydiving simulator at sea, playing glow in the dark laser tag, getting your cocktail crafted by a robot bartender at the Bionic Club, or watching the fascinating and fantastic human/robot production of Starwater in the ships theatre Two70, you’ll definitely be impressed by the advanced features of this massive ship. It’s also worth noting that it broke the Guinness World Record in 2014 for having the tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship, with a rising device dubbed the North Star.
3. Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas Similar to its sister ship (the Quantum of the Seas) in many ways, the Anthem of the Seas by Royal Caribbean took things a little bit further. Released one year after the Quantum, the Anthem surpassed it for the spot of tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship in 2015 with another North Star apparatus. Complete with another robo-show in the Two70 theatre aboard the vessel, the Anthem also offers a “sea plex” with activities like roller skating, bumper cars, and neon skydiving sessions (on a tether). It is 348 meters long and weighs 168 tons.
4. Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas Launched in 2016 the Ovation of the Seas is the third sister ship in the “Quantum” installment and is similarly sized at 348 metres long and 168 tons. It offers all the usual Quantum-standard luxuries and entertainment options, plus a Flow Rider surf simulator that you can actually surf on while enjoying unparalleled views of the route you’ve chosen. Ascend 300 feet above sea level in the North Star after dining at the Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine station designed by the famous Jamie Oliver. The Ovation was the biggest cruise ship to ever explore Alaska at its commencement in 2016.
5. Norwegian Bliss Running slightly shorter than the Quantum series of Royal Caribbean, the Bliss ship by Norwegian Cruise Line clocks in at 168 tons and is almost 334 meters in length. The Bliss won the medal for having the largest racetrack at sea and was the first North American cruise ship to offer the feature at all. There is a plethora of top tier entertainment available, like full productions of musical favorites such as the Jersey Boys, a stunning observation lounge complete with bar, an open-air laser tag course, and even an Aqua Park. And if you’re really looking to spend some cash, you can book out the luxurious “Haven” residences at the top of the ship and enjoy your own private sundeck with a 24-hour butler and concierge service.
